Media Design School Involved In Dr Grordbort Project

Media Design School Students and Stardog collaborate to bring you ‘Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game’

How does one write a press release that begins with Greg Broadmore? He is after all the guy who created Dr Grordbort’s Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory and is a senior conceptual designer at Weta Workshop. He’s the man responsible for the Indivisible Particle Smasher and an assortment of sci-fi weaponry and he has given Media Design School’s 3D Department permission to develop his Dr Grordbort’s property into a short film.

Directed by James Cunningham (Head of 3D) and a team of 11 Advanced 3D production students ‘Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game’ is a 14 week project giving students the chance to work on everything from animating, processing filmed plates and producing 3D creatures and killing them with rayguns.

The short film is Media Design School’s most ambitious project yet. It’s in good hands though, as the Media Design School 3D Department are recipients of an ever increasing list of significant international awards and film festivals including Aspen Shortfest, Talking Pictures, Siggraph and comes off the back of a massive 10 awards win at the Los Angeles Movie Awards this week.

The project is rich with Kiwi talent starring Kiwi actress Morgana O’Reilly (Billy T James, My Wedding & Other Secrets) and Geoff Houtman (After The Waterfall, Russian Snark), with the screenplay written by Nick Ward and cinematography by Simon Riese.

Broadmore has been in regular contact with James Cunningham and the students at Media Design School throughout the production of the film and during his first visit to see the production progress Broadmore asked “when can I hire your students? Seriously, the quality of work coming out of this class is outstanding. With talent like this being fostered, I’m psyched about the future of New Zealand’s film and game industries”.

Director James Cunningham said the opportunity to work on a globally recognised property such as Dr Grordbort, with the full support from Greg Broadmore (creator) and Richard Taylor (co-owner of Stardog and Weta Workshop), was a dream come true for the students who will enter the workforce at the end of the year.

‘Dr Grordbort Present’s: The Deadliest Game’ will be finished late November and available to watch online.
