Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships launched

Polytechnics, Pacific Churches and TEC launch Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships

The Wellington Ministers’ Fellowship, Whitireia and Weltec presented 80 Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships at the Opera House, Wellington on 12 February.

The idea was initially proposed by the leaders of Pacific Churches in New Zealand and supported by the Tertiary Education Commission and Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Hon. Steven Joyce. 300 scholarships are available nationally.

A church service was held at the Opera House in Wellington to award scholarships to students who will attend carpentry, electrical and plumbing programmes at Whitireia and Weltec. Statements of encouragement from the leaders of the Churches, as well as the Chief Executives of the polytechnics and on behalf of the Minister were woven into a sermon, readings from the bible and hymns.

“We will support you in your studies,” said Rev. Popo Su’a, Chairperson Wellington Ministers’ Fellowship. “The Ministers’ Fellowship works for better education, health and social results for Pacific people.” Reverend Popo Su’a spoke about attitudes for success. He encouraged students with a sermon on self-realisation. “It's in the mind”.

“This project reflects the courage of many parties, the churches, the congregations, TEC, the Minister of Education Steven Joyce, the two polytechnics, the combined Council of Whitireia and Weltec, the industry, and particularly the students who have come forward as the first scholarship recipients on this programme,” said Don Campbell, Chief Executive Whitireia New Zealand.

The recipients of the scholarships were presented on stage, ready to start the academic year in the next week.
