National awards for UCOL Cookery students

Students on UCOL’s Professional Cookery Level Four programme won five medals at the National Culinary Fare competitions in Auckland this week.

Chef lecturer Warren McKenzie also won an award for his duck dish.

The students all won a medal in the Soup Class for trainees. Nineteen year old Cinnamin Waiomio is now the country’s top trainee soup maker, taking Gold in the class. Cinnamin’s winning soup was a Pumpkin and Mushroom soup with sautéed shitake mushrooms, truffle oil and mushroom foam. (Pictured)

Fellow UCOL students Jacinta Carmont and Patrice Beard won Silver and Bronze in the same class.

Freya Johansen-Allen won Silver and took top honours in the Open Lamb class, competing against trainees and professional cooks.

Maia Wihare won Bronze in the Fish and Seafood Class which is also open to all competitors.

Chef Lecturer Warren McKenzie won Silver and first placing in the Quack-a-Duck class.

UCOL’s Head of the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Continuing Education, Julie Poole, says the results are outstanding and reflect the quality of teaching and learning on the Professional Cookery programme. “Special thanks to all of the staff who trained the students to such a high level and to those who helped over the very long days during the competition in Auckland.”

The National Culinary Fare was held at the ASB Showground’s in Auckland on Sunday and Monday this week. Awards were presented yesterday.

The competition is organised by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand.
