Towards an independent professional body for teachers

The Teachers Council welcomes the opportunity to constructively engage with the Ministerial Advisory Group on the next phase of the Review of the New Zealand Teachers Council released today.

"Council members are looking forward to meeting with the Chair Dr Graham Stoop and the Advisory Group to discuss a strengthened Council that has the capability to act as an independent professional body advocating for the teaching profession," said Alison McAlpine, Chair of the Teachers Council.

"The 177 submissions received from the teaching profession and education sector strongly endorse a move for the Teachers Council to become an independent statutory body.

"At the heart of our role is our mandate to support quality teaching and learning.

"A more independent Council will support qualified and registered teachers through greater professional learning opportunities that will benefit diverse groups of children and young people."

The governing body will discuss the report and discussion document at its May Council meeting from 28-29 May.
