Whitireia Carpentry Students Win Randall Shaw Memorial Award

Whitireia Carpentry Students Win Randall Shaw Memorial Award

Mitch Jago and Rayden Moore Feuu, have had their carpentry study at Whitireia recognised at a ceremony this week, when they were awarded the Randall Shaw Memorial Award. This award is given annually by the Rotary Club of Plimmerton, in association with Brights Mitre 10, Paramata.

This is the third year that this award has been presented to students studying carpentry at Whitireia. Its purpose is to encourage apprentices to the building industry and to assist with their success within it. The recipients each receive a grant of $1000 to purchase trade tools from Brights Mitre 10.

We are pleased to be awarding the Randall Shaw Memorial Award for another year said Ron Lucas, President Rotary Club, Plimmerton. “Each year we present this award to pre-apprentice students that are likely to succeed in their building career.” The recipients this year certainly fall into this category with them both having secured building apprenticeships already.

Also at the presentation was the Jenny Lucas (Shaw), the widow of Randall Shaw. “It is an honour to be here presenting this award for another year. Randall enjoyed carpentry; there was something about timber that gave him a buzz. I hope you enjoy using the tools that you purchase Mitch and Rayden and that you go on and enjoy and succeed in your building careers.”

Don Campbell, Whitireia Chief Executive, acknowledged the students and the continued relationship that Plimmerton Rotary have through this award with Whitireia. This is an important and special award for these students he said. “This recognises the abilities that these students have in the building trade.”
