Kiwi school children win almost $10,000 for their schools

KIWI SCHOOL CHILDREN WIN ALMOST $10,000 FOR THEIR SCHOOLS IN KIDSCAN CHRISTMAS COFFEE CUP COMPETITION

The Coffee Club New Zealand and KidsCan have launched new Christmas take-away coffee cups and napkin designs, all created by school children who won a nationwide Christmas Cup Art Competition.

The winning designs earned schools a total of $9,000 thanks to their budding artists. The first place design, by a Glen Eden Primary School student, features a cow and a sheep helping a Kiwi bird place a star on top of a Christmas tree, and will appear on large take-away cups.

The new designs hit stores this week and will be available until mid-January. The winning artists were selected from across New Zealand, beating more than 300 entries from over 30 schools supported by KidsCan.

“We’re into our third year of supporting KidsCan with the Christmas Cup Art Competition, and it’s one of the things we’re most proud of. We always get great entries and it’s pretty cool for us to be able to put out the winning designs for other people to enjoy,” says Brad Jacobs, Director of The Coffee Club.

“We really love the Christmas Cup Competition. It’s amazing to see the winning designs and for so many children involved in something which challenges them to be creative, while also drawing attention to KidsCan and the support we need,” says Sophie Mowday, Brand and Sponsorship Manager at KidsCan. “We’re really thankful to The Coffee Club for their support in making this happen and raising awareness of KidsCan.”

The Christmas Cup competition aims to raise awareness of the work being done by KidsCan to support the education, health and wellbeing of children living in hardship. Now in it’s third year it has seen $30,000 donated to schools and the kids by The Coffee Club in that time.

The winning design by Portia De Luen (age 10), of Glen Eden Primary School took first prize for her design, earning $4,000 for her school.

Second place was won by Mya Taylor (age 10) of Frankton School in Hamilton, winning $3,000 for her school. Third place went to Harshini Naidu (age 10), from Firth Primary School, Matamata whose design won $1,500. Fourth place and $500 was awarded to 10-year old Sala Fogavai, from Linden School in Wellington, whose festive design will be printed onto The Coffee Club luncheon napkins. The four young artists also each received $250 Westfield vouchers.

KidsCan works to aid individuals, communities, businesses and the government to co-operate in providing food, clothing and basic health care in schools to enable all disadvantaged children to reach their full potential. The Coffee Club New Zealand has been involved in a number of campaigns and initiatives with KidsCan including The Big Night In Telethon back in 2009, the Mystery Envelope Appeal, Christmas Crackers, Campbell Live Lunchbox Day Appeal and KidsCan Online Auctions.

About KidsCan:

The KidsCan Charitable Trust was co-founded in 2005 in a garage in Greenhithe, Auckland by Julie Chapman. An evaluation which was conducted in 80 low decile schools, after hearing continuous media reports about New Zealand children going without the basics. We wanted to find out just how widespread the problem was and how it was affecting children’s ability to participate in class.

The evaluation revealed that thousands of children were turning up to school cold, wet and hungry because their parents were struggling to make ends meet. Schools reported that this was having a major impact on children’s learning ability, self-esteem and health. Children who miss out on the basics get sick more often, do worse at school and when they become adults they are more likely to be unemployed and have children who will also grow up in hardship.

With all of this in mind we decided to do something about it and KidsCan was started with a generous $40,000 grant from Guardian Trust, now trading as Perpetual Guardian. Today KidsCan supports the education of thousands of children in 598 low decile schools throughout New Zealand, providing food, shoes, socks, fleece lined Vodafone Warriors branded raincoats and basic hygiene items. Our tangible programmes ensure disadvantaged children can get to and through the school’s gates in a better position to learn.
