Early Childhood Education Leaders Support Sector with Messy Play
New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC), New Shoots and Curiate have created a new version of the publication Recipes for Messy Play carrying on the legacy of the original, which was published five years ago and proved popular in the early childhood sector.
Recipes for Messy Play now features a new design and a few more messy play ideas adding to the original recipes for teachers and children to explore.
“We are proud to partner with NZTC to create this smart and stimulating resource to support the development of children’s curiosity through open-ended play,” said Michelle Pratt, Director and Owner of New Shoots and Co-founder of Curiate.
Encouraging children to explore through messy play is also enshrined in Te Whāriki (New Zealand’s early childhood education curriculum), which reminds the sector that messy play supports learning across all its strands, with special mention to communication, exploration and contribution.
“As early childhood educators, advocates for children, and champions of childhoods – it’s our responsibility to live, love and promote play in all its rich variety, as being central to young children’s learning,” NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox said.
“We are proud to support the sector to mess it up a little and ensure children experience the unlimited possibilities of slimy, runny, soft, warm, lumpy and wet.”
All current NZTC students will be gifted a copy of the publication to support their early childhood education teaching practice.
“NZTC is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to care, educate and serve meaningfully and effectively. Recipes for Messy Play furthers this commitment to our students and the early childhood education sector – and most importantly to the development of happy, confident children, thriving through play,” Fox said.
