Summer School offers students another chance to get NCEA

Students who are a few credits short of completing NCEA can get their plans for 2019 back-on-track through learning online with Te Kura’s Summer School.
Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura), formerly the Correspondence School, is New Zealand’s state distance education provider. Te Kura’s annual Summer School offers a range of internal standards across subjects including Science, English and Maths, and has helped hundreds of students gain qualifications.
“A young person might have just missed on getting NCEA by a few credits,” says Te Kura Chief Executive Mike Hollings. “This can be stressful, and set back plans for further study, training or employment. We want to give them another opportunity to succeed.”
Summer School is delivered through Te Kura’s award-winning online learning environment My Te Kura, and qualified subject teachers are available to answer questions and assess work.
“A great aspect of online learning is that, provided you have a device and internet access, you can learn from anywhere and anytime. You can still go on your family holiday or work your holiday job, as well as getting those NCEA credits,” says Mike.
However, with a short time frame and the lure of the beach, Te Kura Summer School students need to be highly motivated in their study.
Rose enrolled in a Summer School English course to get the literacy requirements for entry to the New Zealand Police. As the mother of four young boys, Rose says the flexibility of learning online meant she could study when she had the opportunity.
“It was daunting at first because I had been out of school for a long time. But my teacher Bernie was amazing at keeping me on track and encouraged me to get my assessments done.”
