NZ Treatment Works Focus Week 25-30 June

"Drug problems exist and there are organisations to help" is the key message that key groups involved with addressing drug dependency in our community are focusing during the week called Treatment Works.

Treatment Works highlights the work in prevention and treatment activities for people and communities affected by drug abuse and misuse including alcohol, tobacco, prescription and illegal drugs.

The week is launched today at 3.30 at Christchurch Convention Centre by Deputy Prime Minister Hon Jim Anderton MP, Deputy Mayor Christchurch City Council Lesley Keast, the CEO of Alcohol Advisory Council Mike MacAvoy and Alcohol Drug Association Manager Paul Traynor.

On Monday June 26 International Drug Abuse Day there is a expo of Alcohol and Drug Services along with a forum at the James Hay Theatre (Christchurch 7.30pm - 9.45) with noted health expert from Christchurch School of Medicine, Sandra Kirby (ALAC) and Hon Lianne Dalziel on alcohol and drug issues.

Wednesday will involve open day for the public of key facilities including Odyssey House, Queen Mary Hospital, the Salvation Army, Te Rito Arahi and Pacific Island Evaluation Services.

Thursaday is a one day alcohol and drug conference at Riccarton Park Function Centre Riccarton Racecourse.

Geoff Soma, convenor of Treatment Works is excited by the programme " we are very positive about the groups, individuals and format involved.

The information that can be communicated by such a broad cross sector of the health community are going to contribute to the success of the week."
