NZ On Air To Seek Broadcasters' Input Into Children's Television Strategy

NZ On Air is to brief broadcasters tomorrow (5 July) on its strategic review of children's television.

NZ On Air chief executive, Jo Tyndall said the meetings had been arranged to ensure that broadcasters were able to have input into NZ On Air's strategic review of children's television, which was initiated in November last year.

NZ On Air is currently the primary source of finance for children's television programmes in New Zealand.

"Our review process was initiated to assess whether the New Zealand television environment - encompassing both TV2, as the state broadcaster, and TV3 - was delivering a safe, quality programming environment to our children.

"The first phase of the review was focused on gathering the input of experts on children and children's television, including Ruth Zanker from the New Zealand Broadcasting School.

"This strategic review has now been completed and endorsed by the NZ On Air board.

"The second phase, which includes tomorrow's meetings with TVNZ and TV3, is to seek the input of the broadcasters, prior to implementation of the strategy.

"NZ On Air's key role is as the independent administrator of public broadcasting funding. We also undertake an ongoing research programme to assess and review the public broadcasting environment in New Zealand. This review of children's television is part of that process.

"We welcome TVNZ's announcement that they are undertaking their own review of children's television, and look forward to their input to our overall strategy."
