Recruitment Drive for Census 2001 Begins

Census 2001 Recruitment Drive: October 2001

Recruitment Drive for Census 2001 Begins

A massive recruitment drive is underway to employ staff for Statistics New Zealand's 2001 Census.

Leading up to Census Night on 6 March 2001 Statistics New Zealand will employ an extra 6350 staff to manage the country's five yearly count of our population and dwellings.

"Area management teams have already started setting up offices in 20 regions around the country," says Government Statistician Brian Pink.

The department is currently advertising for 407 district supervisors to work from January till April. They will each supervise around 15 enumerators for six weeks over February and March.

The successful applicants will be people with skills in staff supervision who are able to relate to people from all walks of life. They will need knowledge of their local district, and good organisational and negotiation skills. Applications for district supervisors close on 11 November.

The census is New Zealand's official count of population and dwellings and relies on everyone participating. Information gathered by the census helps community organisations and policy makers make sound decisions about the siting of roads, schools, parks and other ammenties and services. It also assists businesses in making informed decisions when planning to meet customer needs.

Under the Statistics Act 1975 all information collected is only used for statistical purposes, is kept confidential; and information that could identify an individual is not published or otherwise disclosed.
