Time Change For Red Shield Appeal

Time Change For Red Shield Appeal To Raise $7.2 Million

The Salvation Army is moving the Red Shield Appeal to a new date in 2001.

Major Ray Tunstall, Public Relations Secretary said, “It has been agreed in consultation with the National Appeals Association to move the annual Red Shield Appeal (doorknock) to the first week in May 1-7 with the major focus on the weekend”.

“For more than 25 years the Red Shield Appeal has been held on a Monday evening in March.

Changes in work practices, concerns for personal security, both for the giver and our volunteer collectors has made this change necessary”, Major Ray Tunstall said.

The Red Shield Appeal is a national appeal and this change will allow collectors the opportunity to choose a time which best suits them”.

All volunteers should contact their nearest Salvation Army centre to confirm local arrangements.

Major Tunstall said, “We hope to enlist the support of 30,000 volunteers each giving 2 hours of their time to ensure we make a complete coverage of New Zealand”.
