Medical Council Summer Studentships Closing Date

The Council today urged medical students to apply for its 2005/2006 summer studentships applications for which close on Friday, 22 July.

This is the fourteenth year that the studentships have been awarded, giving up to four New Zealand medical students the chance to complete a piece of research for which a grant of $5,000 each is available.

Medical Council chief executive Sue Ineson said, “The studentships aim to raise medical students’ awareness of the work of the Council and the qualities of medical practitioners, which contribute to the highest standards of medical ethics, conduct and care of patients.

“To apply for a studentship, medical students must submit a plan, in consultation with a supervisor, on a topic that takes standards, ethics, conduct and care of patients into account.”

Suggested topics for a summer studentship are:

• Internet prescribing and dispensing
• after hours primary care
• maintaining lifelong competency
• doctors’ awareness of their patients’ use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)
• possible use of telephone advice services eg, Healthline
• doctors’ understanding of treatment injury in new ACC laws
• error management in practice
• prescribing Pharmac-restricted drugs
• new models of care
• education systems for tomorrow’s doctors
• the benefits of the trainee intern year

Examples of past summer studentships are:

· The development of reflective practice in medical education
• Patient expectations of how doctors present themselves
• Attitudes to mandatory reporting of deficient practice by doctors
• The aging academic workforce.

Students may choose their own topics.

Successful applicants will be notified once the Council has made its decision in early September.

Students send a progress report on their topic to the Council in January 2006, with a completion date of 31 March 2006, when the final report is presented to the Council.

More information and application forms for the Summer Studentships may be found on the Council’s website at www.mcnz.org.nz under News and Issues.
