Public Meeting for Thames

Media Release

Date: 29 May 2007

Public Meeting for Thames

Thames-based Waikato DHB member Sally Christie has called a public meeting in Thames on Thursday night (May 31) to discuss the ongoing staff shortages at Thames Hospital.

Mrs Christie said she had become increasingly concerned about the negative publicity which threatened to hinder staff morale and lead to a lack of confidence in the services being provided by the Waikato DHB.

“We can’t go on having claims and counter-claims played out in the media,” she said.

“This is an opportunity for the DHB and members of the public to have their say. The people of Thames and the Coromandel are passionate about their hospital so I expect there’ll be a good turnout.”

Waikato DHB general manager health services Jan Adams said she welcomed the opportunity to attend the public meeting which will start at 7pm in the Thames High School library hall on the corner of Sealey and Mackay Sts.

“We have nothing to hide. We’re doing all we can to recruit medical staff for Thames but the reality is there is a nationwide shortage of doctors. We’re not alone in this – Australia are facing similar problems,” she said.

Ms Adams and Waikato Hospital’s Clinical Leader for Medicine Dr Clyde Wade, who has been seconded to Thames Hospital during the current shortages, and the DHB’s senior project manager Grant O’Brien will attend the public meeting.

Before the meeting Ms Adams and Mrs Christie plan to meet Thames-Coromandel mayor Philippa Barriball and Coromandel MP Sandra Goudie.
