11-year-old patient update - Waikato Hospital

An 11-year-old Hamilton boy admitted to Waikato Hospital this morning after he was allegedly knocked off his bike by a bus just after 8.30am, is in a comfortable condition in Kids Place.

Michael, a student at Peachgrove Intermediate, is still under observation but is expected to be able to go home later today. The accident happened in Silverdale Rd in Hamilton.

His mother Tracey said she hoped the accident did not stop parents encouraging their children to ride bikes.

"This is Bike Safety Month and what happened to Michael is a timely reminder.

"Look out for the unexpected particularly at that time of the day. "Michael did everything right with his bike. It was regularly serviced and in good condition and he was wearing a helmet."

She said she was thankful her son was okay partly due to the fact bike safety was important to him and his family.

"I don't want this to put parents off but other people just have to remember children are much smaller on the road and they should watch out," she said.

"It doesn't matter if you're wearing a suit of armour - if it's a bike versus a bus, the bus wins usually," said Michael.

Media advisory: There is a possibility later today or tomorrow that the mother and son may change their mind about media interest but for the moment they're keen to let him rest and recover.
