Traffic into Sumner will be disrupted today

Traffic into Sumner will be disrupted today as engineers undertake further assessment work and stabilisation of the cliff face which subsided at the weekend and reduced traffic into the seaside suburb to one-way.

Christchurch City Council Transport and Greenspace Manager Alan Beuzenberg says the road was re-opened to two-lane traffic late yesterday but will be reduced to one-lane from 10am today to enable engineers to undertake this work.

"Main Road will be closed to traffic for short periods from 10am to 3pm today to enable this work to be undertaken and the slip to be cleared. Council apologises for any inconvenience to motorists.

"Once this work has been completed, it is expected the area will be declared safe and residents of the two homes evacuated on Saturday night above the slip will be able to return home later today."

About 100 cubic metres of Council reserve land subsided early Saturday morning on to Main Road.
