Westpac Rescue Helicopter transports Injured Paraglider near Wellington

The Wellington Based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to Smiths Gully which is North of Makara Beach near Wellington at approx 10:40am today 16th Dec 09 to a man who had been Paragliding who had fallen and injured his lower back.

The Helicopter with a Wellington Free Ambulance Helicopter Paramedic on board, responded to Smiths Gully.

The 25yr old Porirua man was Paragliding by himself when he was caught in a down draught which caused him to fall 6m hitting the ground. The man was able to call the Ambulance service and give his location and possible injuries.

On the arrival of the helicopter he was spotted about 30m down from the top of a ridge where the helicopter was able to land. After being assessed by the Paramedic it was decided that due to his location and the steepness of the terrain the crew were unable to carry the patient back to the helicopter so the patient was winched into the helicopter.

The man was transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where he is being treated and assessed.
