Innovative support for provincial public hospitals welcomed

FRIDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER 2011

“senior doctors welcome innovative support for provincial public hospitals”

“Senior doctors welcome the innovative support for provincial public hospitals announced by Health Minister Tony Ryall,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

The Health and Education Ministers have announced a partnership with the Universities of Auckland and Otago to train more doctors and other health professionals at Gisborne and Whakatane Hospitals.

“This should expose younger doctors to the attractions of working in provincial hospitals which include the opportunity to treat a wider diversity of illnesses and other health needs.”

“While it will not solve our serious national specialist workforce crisis in public hospitals, hopefully it will go someway to assisting provincial hospitals recruit some younger specialists even while this crisis continues.”

“This sensible innovative move would have greater effect, however, if the government and DHBs would commit to overcoming our national specialist workforce crisis,” concluded Mr Powell.
