David Lange care home officially opened by Bob Harvey

Mangere care home named after the late David Lange was officially opened yesterday by Bob Harvey in a public ceremony. The celebration was attended by community groups, residents and relatives plus representatives of the Manukau District Health Board.

The afternoon included an official Maori powhiri by local tangata whenua and official ribbon cutting by Bob Harvey. The late David Lange's wife Margaret Pope also attended the celebrations and is delighted to be honouring him in this way. "I am thrilled that David's name will be kept in the community, as an MP he had a lot of involvement with the home in its earlier incarnation". said Mrs Pope.

The $3m refurbishment of the old Culverden care home brings 87 additional care home and respite beds to the area. Bupa has received strong support from the Counties Manukau District Health Board and engaged local residents and families and community groups to ensure the right facilities were developed for Mangere.

Culverden care home was closed by Counties Manukau District Health Board in January 2010, as a result of concerns over the quality of care and remained empty until May this year when the first resident moved in the newly refurbished David Lange Care Home.

Providing hospital care to older people in the community is a specialty of Bupa Care Services with 45 rest homes and hospitals nationwide including three nearby; Parkhaven Hospital in Mangere, Hayman rest home and hospital in Manukau and Erin Park Rest Home and Hospital in Manurewa.
