Plunket update: Potential infant formula contamination

Plunket update: Potential infant formula contamination

Plunket is eager to help clarify the confusion that parents and caregivers are experiencing regarding the current situation of potential contamination of whey protein used in infant formula.

Brenda Hynes, Plunket General Manager of Service Delivery say parents and caregivers are understandably concerned.

“Plunket’s telephone advice line, PlunketLine, has been inundated with calls since the weekend and call numbers continue to increase.

“There is a lot of confusion out there and people aren’t sure which advice they should be following.

“Plunket is advising parents that they should be following the advice of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). MPI is leading the government’s response to this issue and is the official source of information”, she says.

The latest information from the Ministry for Primary Industries, as at 11.30 on Monday 5 August is:

Only two lines of Nutricia Karicare infant formula have been recalled:

· Nutricia Karicare Stage 1 new baby infant formula (from birth) – all batches

· Nutricia Karicare Gold+ Stage 2 follow on formula (from six months ) – all batches

The recall does not affect any other Nutricia Karicare products.

This is an evolving situation - please keep referring to http://mpi.govt.nz/food/food-safety/whey-protein-contamination for the most up-to-date official information.
