HealthCare NZ welcomes Mental Health and Addiction Inquiry

HealthCare NZ welcomes Mental Health and Addiction Inquiry Report

Media release: 4 December 2018

Mental health support provider HealthCare NZ has welcomed He Ara Oranga - the report of the Government’s Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction Services.

“We are pleased the inquiry has highlighted the many challenges and barriers facing people with mental health and addiction issues and provided clear recommendations - but the real test will be what practical improvements are made as a result,” says HealthCare NZ Acting Chief Executive, Louise Zacest.

“Through our Mental Health NZ division, we made a submission to the inquiry containing direct feedback from community-based Recovery Facilitators, who work closely with people experiencing mental illness and addiction.”

“Mental illness and addictions are often invisible, and too often reach crisis point before people are able to receive treatment and support.”

“We are encouraged by the report’s focus on increasing the reach of mental health and addiction services, and its recognition of the need for a more person-focussed approach.”

“As noted in the report, Non-Government service providers play an important role. We encourage the Government to act on the inquiry’s recommendations quickly, and in particular we look forward to seeing more early-intervention mental health and addiction support become available.”

“As a leading home, community health and behavioural health provider, HealthCare NZ would welcome any opportunity to contribute to improving the accessibility or effectiveness of mental health and addiction support,” Mrs Zacest says.
