Phone Booth Restored To Former Glory

Phone Booth Restored To Former Glory
Media Release From Telecom

Little River residents will be able to make calls from their recommissioned and spruced-up classic red telephone booth from this week.

Telecom's only public telephone box in the area, situated outside the Little River Railway Station, replaces the one that was outside the local store that was burnt out in January this year.

"Telecom approached the Little River Railway Trust and the Co-Operative Craft Shop (the occupants of the Railway Building) and were given permission to put the older red phone booth outside the Railway Station back into working use again," said Telecom Payphones Account Manager, Alyson Moody. "We recognised there was already an existing phone box there, and that the locality has special historic interest so it was fitting to refit the old phone booth.

"Quite a bit of technical work was needed to re-commission the booth to keep the network secure and keep it in running order so we spirited the booth back to Christchurch," Ms Moody said.

"The booth also underwent a re-paint to restore it to its former scarlet glory.

"Telecom is delighted with the result and hope that Little River will enjoy the restored booth which has become a New Zealand classic.

"The booth will return this week with a Telecom CardPhone. In September it will be upgraded to the new multi-payment CardPhones that uses new Telecom Chip PhoneCards, Credit Cards and Telecom Calling Cards," Ms Moody said.
