Candlelight Rally To Support East Timor - And To Demand Indonesian Troop Withdrawal.

On Friday September 17 at 6 p.m. there will be a candlelight rally in Queen Elizabeth Square to mobilise support for the people of East Timor at their time of crisis. The Topp Twins will be singing and there will be indigenous East Timorese music interspersed with short speeches."

"We are delighted that the Topp Twins have offered their support at this vital time."

"We plan to intensify our fund-raising efforts - money collected here will be used to help with the essential reconstruction and rebuilding of a free East Timor."

"We are appalled that the United Nations has not banned the Indonesian military from any role in the security of East Timor. The Indonesian forces should be ordered to withdraw immediately. "

"The UN should have learned from the disastrous decision of the May 5 UN accords that allowed 20,000 Indonesian troops to remain in East Timor."

"The various branches of the Indonesian military have been coordinating the forced exodus of the East Timorese from their homes, directing the actions of the murderous militia and spying on and reporting on East Timorese people who have been part of the independence movement. They must to go!"

"The East Timorese people must be helped to return home to their villages and their lives free from all threat from the Indonesian military and from its militia proxies."
