Bad Teachers Under Scrutiny


The Education Minister, Trevor Mallard, says he is considering changing the law so that bad teachers are not continually rehired by schools.

Poor records kept by schools meant bad teachers could move from school to school without being traced or deregistered the minister said.

Schools were also reluctant to penalize bad teachers and did not notify the teacher monitoring body, the Teacher Registration Board, of their concerns.

Instead they became embroiled in personal grievance claims when they dismissed teachers, Mr Mallard said.

The Minister said the Government would consider changing the legislation giving the Teacher's Registration Board more power to discipline teachers.
