Human Rights Commission has pulled together a meeting of mainstream media and religious representatives in Wellington today to discuss "the issues surrounding the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in some New Zealand media". The move follows a decision to publish cartoon caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in Fairfax's Dominion Post and Christchurch Press newspapers. Employment: Statistics NZ Records End To Paid Hour Growth

- Total paid hours, as measured by the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES), were relatively unchanged in the year to December 2005, Statistics New Zealand said today. The result is an end to a period of annual growth in paid hours since the December 1998 year. However, strong earnings growth continues, as shown in both the QES and Labour Cost Index (LCI). See... - Many Islamists - both those in governments in the Middle East and those that are vying for power and in opposition elsewhere - are openly calling for the heads of the editors of newspapers that have published or republished the caricatures of Mohammad…The response of western and European governments and sections of the media is interesting. Some governments and big business are worried about their trade; others see freedom of expression as harmful to their power and others for purely political reasons follow a strategic policy of accommodation and appeasement of the political Islamic movement. As a result, they all have lost their capacity to defend the unconditional freedom of expression; any reference to this freedom is followed by many ifs and buts. See... Tokelau Population to Vote on the Island’s Political Status

- In preparation for a landmark referendum on Saturday that could change Tokelau’s political status, a team of United Nations observers is going to the tiny South Pacific atolls that make up the Non-Self-Governing Territory, which is currently administered by New Zealand. A new survey has found that the vast majority of employers are pleased with the skilled migrants they are hiring under the Skilled Migrant Category introduced in 2003. Foreign Affairs: Goff Scores NATO Defence Intel Deal

- New Zealand and NATO have reached agreement on exchanging classified information on a regular basis, which will help facilitate peacekeeping operations where both are involved. The Exchange of Letters took place today in Brussels when Defence Minister Phil Goff met with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. "New Zealand has worked with NATO in Bosnia and currently operates alongside NATO forces in Afghanistan. This agreement will provide for the exchange of classified information on a regular basis, rather than on an ad hoc basis as has been the practice to date," Mr Goff said. See...
