Tonga Deployment: NZ Troops Seen As Supporting Monarchy

The New Zealand Government should take note of concerns that the presence of New Zealand troops in Tonga could be seen to strengthen the hand of the monarchy, Green MP Keith Locke warns. Leaders of Tonga's democracy movement have expressed concerns that Australian and New Zealand troops in Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa could in practice reinforce the political system that caused unrest in the first place. Legislation: Nats' Section 59 Amendment Gets Smackdown

The Justice and Electoral Committee is supporting a law change designed to remove the statutory defence for parents who use force against their children for the purpose of correction, but with some amendments to clarify that reasonable force can be used when a parent is protecting a child from harm... The committee recommends, by majority, that section 59 of the Crimes Act 1961 be replaced by a new section that will remove the defence of using "reasonable force" against a child for the purpose of correction.
