Antiquities: Suzan Mazur Examines The Provenance Of A Bronze Boy

- New York collector Stuart Pivar says the odyssey of his "nearly life-size" Roman bronze boy includes a chapter on an attempted "assassination" of the statue. He identifies the place of treachery as the Hunt-Sotheby's auction, June 19,1990. And he fingers the lead assassin: Bob Hecht. Hecht is now on trial in Rome for another conspiracy, one to traffic in ancient art, including pieces from the Hunt-Sotheby's sale. See... The Odyssey Of Stuart Pivar's Roman Bronze Boy [1]

Motornet: BMW's Hatchback Reviewed

It’s a Friday night. Things are quiet at this end of town, and few people are about save a couple of commuters who perhaps stayed for one beer two many and now make haste to catch a train to the suburbs. The night is unusually still for Wellington, and yet the still air of the carpark is punctuated by a noise petrolheads everywhere would recognize – the revving of a BMW straight six singing sonorously. Like giddy schoolboys, we simply can’t get enough of its gloriously mechanical noise. See... MOTORNET: Free-Revving Six - BMW 130i [1]

Iraq: President Bush – Mission Not Accomplished

- President Bush acknowledged for the first time yesterday that the United States is not winning the war in Iraq and said he plans to expand the overall size of the "stressed" U.S. armed forces to meet the challenges of a long-term global struggle against terrorists. Biological Weapons: Bush Admin. Developing Illegal Bioterror Weapons

    - In violation of the U.S. Code and international law, the Bush administration is spending more money (in inflation-adjusted dollars) to develop illegal, offensive germ warfare than the $2-billion spent in World War II on the Manhattan Project to make the atomic bomb. See… Developing Illegal Offensive Use Bioterror Weapons [1]

The Rule Of Law: Justice Weighs In On Post Constitutional America (2)

Washington - Former ambassador Joseph Wilson asked a federal judge Wednesday not to force him to testify in the CIA leak case and accused former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby of trying to harass him on the witness stand. See... Link: Wilson Challenges Subpoena in CIA Case [1] MORE:

American Coup: Brad Friedman & Paul Lehto Comment On Paper Ballot Coalitions

    - Concerning Michael Collins' latest article in regard to the coalition formed to demand a paper BALLOT for every vote cast in America, he has made a number of points (and perhaps one error, at least in terminology) that I'd like to clear up. Dunne Speaks: Robertson's Budget Gamble On Treasury
The popular test of the success or failure of Grant Robertson’s fifth Budget will be its impact on the soaring cost of living. In today’s climate little else matters. Because governments come and governments go – about every six to seven years on average since 1945 – getting too focused on their long-term fiscal aspirations is often pointless... More>>

Keith Rankin: Liberal Democracy In The New Neonationalist Era: The Three 'O's
The proposed ‘New Zealand Income Insurance Scheme’ (‘the scheme’) has attracted strong debate among the more left-wing and liberal groupings, within New Zealand-Aotearoa. This debate should be seen as a positive rather than negative tension because of the opportunity to consider and learn from the implications and sharpen advocacy... More>>

Dunne Speaks: Words Matter, Prime Minister
Words matter, especially when uttered by politicians. History is littered with examples of careless or injudicious words uttered by politicians coming back to haunt them, often at the most awkward of times. During the 1987 election campaign, when electoral reform was a hot issue, Prime Minister David Lange promised to have a referendum on the electoral system... More>>

Binoy Kampmark: Leaking For Roe V Wade
The US Supreme Court Chief Justice was furious. For the first time in history, the raw judicial process of one of the most powerful, and opaque arms of government, had been exposed via media – at least in preliminary form. It resembled, in no negligible way, the publication by WikiLeaks of various drafts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership... More>>

The Conversation: Cheaper food comes with other costs – why cutting GST isn't the answer

As New Zealand considers the removal of the goods and services tax (GST) from food to reduce costs for low income households, advocates need to consider the impact cheap food has on the environment and whether there are better options to help struggling families... More>>
