Fashion: Rising Star Cybèle - Does It Again

Fashionz.co.nz: Rising Star Cybèle - Does It Again

Cybèle - New Zealand’s rising star of fashion has done it again – with a bang.

For winter 08, Cybèle Wiren brings a more mysterious mood to her collection, a far cry from the bold and obvious geometric prints of collections gone by.

Entitled Eclipse, Cybèle’s 11th collection is inspired by its namesake and the prints and lines are informed by painting techniques – brush strokes, texture and ‘bodily sized gestural movements across the page”.

The palate is largely organic with bronze and black forming the base of the collection, accented with ochre, ink blue, orange, canary yellow and stark white.

The moody collection drapes around the body, rather than hugging it – dresses are fluid and goddess-like, while hooded vests, and gathered jackets add a utilitarian element.

The addition of knitwear for winter saw oversized cardigans and shift jersey dresses cement themselves as key pieces, as did the floor length evening gowns in bronze and a paint splatter print.

A key element in the collection, a calligraphic bird of paradise wing motif, flies across the sleeves and front panels of soft organza shifts.

Backstage after the show, a glowing Cybèle named the final piece in collection – a floor length, paint print gown, as her favourite, and talked of the smocking technique that allowed her to create the gorgeous gathers in the garments.

She said her collections are always inspired by the initial spark she gets from colours and that this time round she is definitely having a renaissance of brown.

The mood of the collection was based on “the eerie and weird feeling that comes hand in hand with a solar eclipse” says Cybèle.
