Telecom announces roll-out of super-fast internet

Jan. 30 – Telecom Corp.’s wholesale division will roll out super-fast broadband to all major cities and towns from March, the nation’s biggest phone company said.

Telecom will introduce Very High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2), the most advanced standard of super-fast broadband, that will offer subscribers download speeds of up to 50Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps, and make it easier to download large files and to employ multiple audio and video applications.

“It offers a huge step-up in broadband speed and is the next key phase of Telecom New Zealand’s multi-billion dollar capital expenditure programme,” said chief executive Paul Reynolds in a statement. “Peak connect speeds have leaped well ahead of where they were even a year ago, and soon VDSL2 will offer peak speeds of up to 50Mbps downstream.”

Telecom Wholesale chief executive Matt Crockett said they can provide much faster broadband service by getting fibre and the VDSL2 electronics closer, and will install VDSL2 line cards in all roadside cabinets and local telephone exchanges in towns and cities with more than 500 lines from March.

Service providers will be offered a new product in key Auckland areas in the second quarter, with all other major cities and towns coming on board in the third quarter of the year.

Australian-owned TelstraClear Ltd. launched a VDSL2 service to business customers in selected areas last October after installing components on the company’s network.

Telecom’s shares were unchanged at NZ$2.66.
