Guantanamo Prison's True
Secret
Angola 3 News, Truthout: "[T]he truth is 'much
more mundane' than 'some huge national security secret....
It's about cruelty, incompetence, embarrassment ... But
above all, it's about the torture, abuse, coercion and
bribery that was in Guantanamo. There was a house of cards
of evidence built out of nothing except the testimony of
prisoners and their fellow prisoners, who were abused or
persuaded in other ways to produce what masquerades as the
evidence. That's the true secret.'"

Occupy AIPAC:
"The Battle for Justice in the Middle East Is Our
Battle"
Allison Kilkenny, In These Times: "Hundreds
of protesters from Occupy AIPAC protested outside AIPAC's
annual policy conference in Washington DC yesterday during
speeches by President Obama and Israeli President Shimon
Peres. The group spelled out 'NO WAR ON IRAN' in giant
letters and set up mock checkpoints and an 'Annexation
Wall.' Protesters remarked on the increased awareness and
interest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict following the
Arab Spring ..."

BP Settles While
Macondo "Seeps"
Dahr Jamail, Al Jazeera: "As BP
settles out of court for the first phase of thousands of
lawsuits that could cost the company tens of billions of
dollars, Al Jazeera has spotted a large oil sheen near the
infamous Macondo 252 well.... Experts believe the oil is
likely to be from a seep in the seabed ... many believe it
may well have been caused by BP's blowout well and the
failed attempts to cap it during spring 2010."

AIPAC Works for the 1 Percent
Chris Hedges, Truthdig:
"What is being done in Gaza, the world's largest open-air
prison, is a pale reflection of what is slowly happening to
the rest of us. It is a window into the rise of the global
security state, our new governing system that the political
philosopher Sheldon Wolin calls 'inverted
totalitarianism.'... And one of the greatest purveyors of
this demented ideology ... is the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee, or AIPAC"

Obama Says
Military Force Is Option to Keep Iran From Getting Nuclear
Weapons
Lesley Clark, McClatchy Newspapers:
"President Barack Obama insisted Sunday he'd call for
military action to prevent Iran from securing a nuclear
weapon, even as he urged Israel and its supporters to
refrain from 'loose talk of war' and allow diplomacy and
'crippling sanctions' to work. Speaking a day before a
meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
Obama told the influential American Israel Public Affairs
Committee that he's got 'Israel's back' and is unalterably
opposed to Iran getting a nuclear weapon."

Dean Baker | Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the
Bowles-Simpson Commission Report
Dean Baker,
Truthout: "Parents often find it useful to tell their
children about nonexistent creatures to instill habits of
good behavior. It seems that many political leaders are
going the same route. How else can one explain the repeated
references to the Bowles-Simpson commission report and its
advice to the country on how to reduce the deficit? The
point here is a simple one: there was no Bowles-Simpson
commission report."

Treating Sick Rich Folks
Jim Hightower, OtherWords:
"From New York to Los Angeles, hospitals that draw huge
subsidies from taxpayers (and often are so overcrowded that
regular patients are lucky to get a gurney in the hallway)
have set aside entire floors for $2,400-a-day deluxe suites.
They come with butlers, 5-star meals, marble baths, imported
bed sheets, special kitchens, and other amenities for swells
who have both insurance and cash to burn."

How to Fund an
American Police State: Real Money for an Imaginary
War
Stephen Salisbury, TomDispatch: "All told, the
federal government has appropriated about $635 billion,
accounting for inflation, for homeland security-related
activities and equipment since the 9/11 attacks. To
conclude, though, that 'the police' have become increasingly
militarized casts too narrow a net. The truth is that
virtually the entire apparatus of government has been
mobilized and militarized right down to the university
campus."
