Alcohol Age Debate On Thursday

MPs will vote on the minimum age to purchase alcohol next Thursday.

Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee said in his Business Statement to Parliament, MPs would vote on part two of the Alcohol Reform Bill on Thursday Afternoon.

This part of the bill deals with the age a person should be to buy alcohol in both on-licence and off-licence premises.

These votes are usually a conscience issue and Brownlee said how MPs voted would be a matter between parties and the Speaker.

Brownlee said next Tuesday the Government would seek to complete the third reading of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Bill and the introduction of the National War Memorial Park (Pukeahu) Empowering Bill

Wednesday is a members’ day.

On Thursday the House will sit from 9am to debate the Social Services Committee’s report on the Inquiry into the identification, rehabilitation, and care and protection of child offenders. The House will also deal with the second readings of the Electronic Identity Verification Bill, the Identity Information Confirmation Bill, and the Legislation Bill.

The Government’s response to the Regulation Review Committee’s report on a complaint over legal service fees was presented.

Select committee reports were presented on the:

Special report on the 2012/13 Estimates for Vote Internal Affairs: Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector by the Social Services Committee; and the

Visit of a delegation of parliamentarians from the Legislative Assembly of Niue by the Finance and Expenditure Committee

The Auditor-General’s report Inquiry into aspects of ACC’s Board-level governance was presented and the National War Memorial Park (Pukeahu) Empowering Bill and Student Loan Scheme Amendment Bill (No 2) were introduced.

MPs began Question Time.
