Vote Race On Alcohol Age Decisions

MPs have agreed on the method they will use to decide on what the minimum age to purchase alcohol should be.

When the House resumed today, Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee said the Business Committee had agreed that on Thursday afternoon MPs would debate part two of the Alcohol Bill.

This would take the form of a debate in principle with a vote at 5.30.

The decision would be made on a straight vote on whether the minimum age to purchase alcohol should be 18, 20 or split.

If there was not a clear majority on the first vote a second vote would be held between the two most preferred options.

After this amendments to the rest of the Alcohol Bill would be drawn up to reflect Parliament’ wishes.

Select committee reports were presented on the:

Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Home-based Support Services for Older People by the Social Services Committee; and the

Petition 2008/142 of Johannes Jozef Rikkerink by the Commerce Committee

MPs began Question Time.
