Time To Scrap Annual Bill

The Subordinate Legislation (Confirmation and Validation) Bill is an outdated legislative vehicle that should be scrapped Parliament was told today.

Chester Borrows introducing the bill on behalf of the Leader of the House said the bill was routine and technical, but important as it validated and confirmed regulations and orders.

Labour MP Charles Chauvel said the bill had become outdated as a vehicle for validating regulations and orders and it would be better to just send them directly to the Regulations Review Committee for examination instead of taking up parliamentary time.

The Bill is an annual event which usually receives cross party support and did so again today with it sent to the Regulations Review Committee with a November 5 report back date.

Chauvel said he hoped the committee, which he chairs, would recommend that the bill format for validation be revamped.

MPs began debate on the Marine Legislation Bill .
