Smith’s Swan Song
Former Speaker and Minister Lockwood Smith said farewell to Parliament today saying one of his great political regrets was against homosexual law reform
Lockwood Smith said
the Speaker’s role was wider than managing the House but
in maintaining parliamentary democracy.
Smith said when he came into office New Zealand was struggling to find markets after Britain entered the EEC.
He said both the Lange and Bolger administations should be praised for the work they had done to reform the economy.
During his time he had seen 288 MPs arrive and 263 leave, then Parliament had been a very different place.
