Gambling Bill Progresses
More than seven years after it was introduced a gambling amendment bill is finally nearing its final hurdle after the committee stage was completed tonight.
The Gambling Amendment Bill (No 2) was introduced in 2007 with a select committee report back in 2008. It makes small policy amendments and many technical amendments to the complex and prescriptive Gambling Act 2003.
A number of MPs spoke about their concerns that the bill was not doing enough to address the issue of problem gambling, while NZ First MPs expressed concern the bill would reduce the profits of gambling being returned to community groups.
The bill completed its committee stage and was reported with amendment. NZ First opposed a number of parts of the bill but progress was made by 108 to 11 with NZ First in favour
MPs then began the committee stage debate on the Parole Amendment Bill.
