Social Media Debate And Members’ Day

MPs will vote on Members’ bills this afternoon including one on the issue of paid parental leave, there will also be debate on the Privileges Committee report on social media.

Following Question Time and the General Debate, MPs will debate the Privileges Committee report “Question of privilege regarding use of social media to report on parliamentary proceedings”.

Amongst other things the report clarifies the status of comments made by MPs on social media while the House is sitting. It also proposes curtailing MPs taking photos and filming in the House while it is sitting except in special circumstances.

This will be followed by the first reading of Wellington Town Belt Bill. This is a local bill intended to improve the governance arrangements for the Wellington Town Belt and strengthen its protection.

This will be followed by the first reading of the New Zealand Superannuation and Retirement Income (Pro Rata Entitlement) Amendment Bill. The bill in the name of NZ First MP Denis O’Rourke proposes entitlement to New Zealand Superannuation be based on a person’s length of residency in New Zealand between the ages of 20 and 65.

Then will come the first reading of the Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months’ Paid Leave and Work Contact Hours) Amendment Bill. The bill in the name of Labour MP Sue Moroney proposes to extend paid parental leave to 26 weeks.
