SCHOOL CERT: School Certificate due to be axed at the end of the year has been given a reprieve. National Certificate will now be introduced in 2002.

SCHOOL SHOOTING: A pupil in Michigan has shot a teacher and pupil.

MOZAMBIQUE FLOODS: Mozambique flood waters are continuing to rise with flood waters claiming another town overnight. UN spokeswoman says rescuing those stranded in trees and on rooftops is the main priority.

AUSTRIA: The EU says it won’t jump to unfreeze its relationship with Austria just because of the resignation of Jorge Haider from the leadership of the Freedom Party.

AMERICAS CUP: The chances of Team NZ and Prada racing today are looking good - 15 knot winds are expected.

CHATHAM DR LEAVES: The doctor appointed to work on the Chatham Islands has decided to leave and go to Tasmania – partly because the Medical Association would not allow his Swedish wife, also a doctor, to register.

MAORI HEALTH: The Maori Development Agency – TPK - is advocating the setting up of a separate funding agency for Maori Health.

WINZ: Staff at Canterbury University say students are having comments made about their degree choices by WINZ staff.

LORD OF THE RINGS: Ruapehu residents are on tenterhooks waiting to know whether the Department of Conservation will allow Lord of the Rings to be filmed in Tongariro National Park.

NIGERIA: The Nigerian Government says that northern states have agreed to suspend the introduction of Islamic law following a crisis meeting.
