Refugee Smuggling - Police are involved in an international people smuggling ring based in Auckland. Allegations are that the refugees are from Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq and allegedly pay up to $30,000 to live in New Zealand. They are supplied with false documents and are essentially ghosts with no backgrounds. A syndicate stood to make around $10 to $20 million.

Police Review Axed - The Government has axed National's police review that was to potentially lose up to 400 jobs and save $40 million. $17 million has so far been spent to save $18 million. Although a further $18 million per year is expected to be saved from now on. 70 unsworn staff have already gone and a remaining 30 will keep their jobs. Police have welcomed the dumping of the review.

Alleged Paedophiles - Two men alleged by police to be paedophiles appear in court this week. A 47 year-old stands accused of indecent assault of 13 boys and a 36 year-old is facing 14 charges on five boys dating back two years.

Body Found - The body of 59 year-old David Israel has been found in a house in Wanganui. Winter Hits South - A six centimetre snow fall has hit central Otago and Coronet Peak about one month earlier than expected. Dunedin had 80 millimeters or one month's rainfall in one day. Water logged trees have fallen to block roads and in Temuka emergency services have been called in to pump flooded streets.

Test Cricket History - 21 year-old Daniel Vettori is the youngest test cricketer ever to capture 100 test wickets. Today's outing by Vettori, a spin bowler, saw him take 7 for 87. It is the best one-innings analysis for a New Zealand spinner. Sir Richard Hadlee, a medium-fast pace bowler, played until he was 39 and captured 453 test wickets while Vettori with 18 years to go until he reaches Hadlee's age will likely surpass Hadlee's efforts.
