RUSSIAN ELECTION: Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin is heading toward an apparent victory in the Russian elections. Two exit polls have his vote very close to the 50% mark which would win him victory in the first round. Genady Zhuganov says he is confident there will now be a second round on April 16th.
WORK FOR THE DOLE: Steve Maharey is moving to axe the work for the dole scheme saying all the advice he has says it is a failure. Maharey has released a report saying that being on the scheme had no positive effects.
CLINTON SYRIA SUMMIT: President Clinton and President Assad are holding discussions in Geneva on restarting peace talks between Syria and Israel. Madeleine Albright says that security is the key.
TE PAPA REVIEW: There is criticism of how a review has been set up to examine Te Papa. The review includes an Australian and two Aucklanders – one a vocal critic of Te Papa. Luit Beiringa says the review team is male and white and ignores others with valuable experience.
NUIE TAX HAVEN: Nuie’s offshore banking laws are being accused of being used to assist NZ companies to evade tax in NZ. The Nuiean PM says that his Government has no intention of changing its tax laws. IRD says it routinely audits companies with dealings with tax havens.
ALEXANDRA FLOODS: Alexandra flood victims are welcoming a report which recommends $12 million be used to purchase flood affected properties in Alexandra. Deputy PM Jim Anderton says the government is looking at liability issues.
CHILDREN IN THE MEDIA: Children’s Commissioner Roger McClay says that the media have to be more careful when dealing with the rights of Children in the media. A forum on children’s rights in the media is being held today. The forum will also explore advertising during children’s TV and the growth of the Internet.
