Cancer Inquiry - Yacht Sinks - Porirua Communications Tower - Rodney Council Sacked - Scott Watson Appeal
CANCER INQUIRY: The first day of the Gisborne Cancer Inquiry has opened with tearful evidence from victims of misdiagnosis. "The fact is he was too arrogant to acknowledge his mistakes," witness no 1. Another woman also described horrific consequences of treatment started as result of misdiagnosis. YACHT SINKS: Yacht sinks suddenly off the coast of Great Barrier Island after the mast breaks. The boat had been headed for Micronesia. All the crew were rescued. Aboard the yacht was a special artifact from Micronesia - a magical navigation aid.
PORIRUA COMMUNICATIONS TOWER: A transmitter that was the hub of radio communications in Porirua has been cut down by vandals. Police have no clues as to why the transmitting tower was cut down. Vodaphone says transmissions are nearly back to normal after re-routing of calls.
RODNEY COUNCIL SACKED: Democracy is suspended in Rodney District with the appointment of a commissioner to replace the divided council. Last month the Mayor and five councilors resigned. Ross Meurant is not apologetic. A review described the council as clearly dysfunctional.
SCOTT WATSON APPEAL: The man convicted of the murders of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope today took his appeal to the Court of Appeal. Last year during the trial the case was at the court. Watson's lawyer began submissions saying the case was finely balanced. Focus made on evidence that had originally been excluded but which the trial judge later changed his mind about. Watson's defence also claimed that the Guy Wallace identification of Scott Watson was flawed. The lawyers are seeking a retrial and a reduction in sentence.
