Early End To Logging - Chinese Premier Demonstration - Mckinnon In Zimbabwe - Bad Week For Rugger

EARLY END TO LOGGING: The Government has announced Rimu logging will be given the chop five years chop early in 2002. TheWest Coast mayors, who met with Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton and Finance Minister Michael Cullen this afternoon, say they are not happy. The Greens are also unimpressed by the compromise which they say comes too late. Meanwhile, South Island sawmillers and other interests affected by the early end to logging contracts say they will seek legal advice.

CHINESE PREMIER DEMONSTRATION: Christchurch Police have defended their handling of a protesters demonstrating against the Chinese premier last year and say they would do it all again under the same circumstances. A Parliamentary inquiry in Christchurch is listening to claims that former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley overused her influence to keep the demonstrators away from the meeting.

MCKINNON IN ZIMBABWE: Don McKinnon, New Zealand’s former foreign affairs minister, is due to land in Zimbabwe tonight in his role as Commonwealth Secretary General. He will discuss elections with Zimababwe President Robert Mugabe.

BAD WEEK FOR RUGGER: After a woeful weekend for our Super 12 teams New Zealand sporting fans are still groaning about the demise of good rugby. However some old rugby greats have gathered to reminisce the good old times.
