MEDIA SHOT AT: Reporter Bob McNeil and cameraman shot at. Streets evacuated. Policeman shot. Control of streets assigned to army. Journalists threatened by mob leave town. First to a hotel and then to Nandi. They plan to wait there to see how dangerous it is.

MEDIA LEAVE SUVA AFTER NIGHT OF VIOLENCE. Bob McNeil now out of Suva. Shots came close to them from armed gunmen. Journalists are obviously targets. This morning we heard the mob were going to invade the hotel. Nearly everybody has moved down the coast to Pacific harbour. Many more journalists have moved on to Nandi.

FJI TOP OF CABINET AGENDA: Helen Clark was trying to explain today how to take a whack at Speight and not Fiji. Message from NZ you are not welcome to visit NZ, Australia and possibly the US. Phil Goff says Speight will feel smart sanctions. PM announces a smorgasbord of possible sanctions. Auckland Rugby League has cancelled a tour of Fiji. The PM says she is pleased with the sport boycott. Phil Goff is also asking media not to report Speight. Be aware of the possible consequences of criticising Speight.

LABOUR LAW CHANGES: The Employment Relations Bill is to be modified. Parliamentary Select Committee meeting in Auckland. Government says it is listening to business. And has always been listening. However the principles of the bill will stand. Clarification expected in the area of directors responsibilities and definition of contractors area.

DAVID BAIN DEFAMATION: A High Court has been sent home to read a book in a defamation trial into Joe Karam's book on the David Bain murder. The case is expected to last two weeks.

MYSTERY MAN: Mystery man at Auckland City Mission. He thinks his name might by John Reid and that he might be from Wellington. He doesn't know how he got to Auckland. Mission staff say they can't find out his identity. City Mission say they can't even get the man a benefit because they do not know who he is.
