SOLOMON ISLANDS: Foreign Minister Phil Goff is leaving today for Australia and may arrive in the Solomon Islands on Saturday. He wants to assist in getting the parties to the conflict talking to each other.
SOLOMON ISLANDS: 52 Kiwis were among 330 expats who spent the night on the Australian Naval vessel the Tobruk overnight. Honiara is peaceful this morning according to a reporter on the ground.
FIJI COUP: A delegation of 12 chiefs from Fiji’s Western province is due to meet with Fiji coup leader George Speight shortly to discuss proposals to reinstate a civilian government. The chiefs met yesterday and decided on one of their number to head the new government.
FIJI COUP: The Council for Trade Unions will resume talks today with Fiji trade unionists on what it might do to help resolve the crisis in Fiji. A spokesman for the Fiji business council says that trade sanctions would only hurt the people of Fiji.
MURDER: The police in Auckland say a key to the puzzle of the murder of Kylie Jones will be to discover what bus she was on on Tuesday night.
INDONESIAN QUAKE: Residents of the quake devastated province of Indonesia have taken to the streets protesting the slowness of the emergency response. Protestors have demanded immediate food and help.
BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE: A bus driver shortage in Wellington is being blamed on the Sydney Olympics and the Americas Cup in Auckland.
TRAFFIC SAFETY: One of the countries former top Traffic Officers says the return to a highway patrol is long overdue. A former superintendent says that NZ lost one of the best operations in the world when it merged the Police and Traffic Officer services.
DOCTORS PACKAGE: An $11.8 million package is being targeted at assisting overseas doctors who have been left unemployed, and in unskilled jobs, due to problems with recognising their qualifications.
