James Whakaruru – The Tribe – Backpackers Fire – People’s Bank – Child Abuse – Flesh Eating Disease – Inside Political Headlines – Editorial: Dover Samuels

JAMES WHAKARURU: The Dominion leads today with a report that Government agencies have been accused of “staggering omissions” by the children’s commissioner, who has implicated them in the death of four-year-old James Whakaruru. A smiling James is pictured with the story.

THE TRIBE: The front-page picture shows a two fans of the TV show The Tribe with one of the stars. The fans had won a lookalike competition.

- BACKPACKERS FIRE: a report that a Kiwi survivor of Queensland’s fatal hostel fire has told how she often used to sit in the same lounge with the man police suspect of starting the fire;

- PEOPLE’S BANK: a report that Deputy PM Jim Anderton says he will be the first in line to open an account with his proposed “People’s Bank” – but will probably keep his mortgage with one of the big banks;

- CHILD ABUSE: a report that a scathing police report states that sexual and physical abuse of children is given “extremely lo priority” by police bosses – and in some areas “the investigations of child abuse, no matter how serious, do not happen”;

- FLESH EATING DISEASE: a report that a flesh eating disease may have claimed the life of a woman who died at Christchurch Hospital according to a Canterbury Health spokeswoman.
