ZIMBABWE ELECTIONS: The opposition Movement For Democratic Change has won eight of 13 seats so far declared in the Zimbabwe elections. The margin between the two parties was not that great. (Later – just after the bulletin - the count was 16 to 13.)

ZIMBABWE ELECTIONS: One of the observers at the election reckons that more of the vote has been counted than has been announced publicly. The observer said it would be impossible to describe the elections as fair and free.

FIJI: COUP: The Fiji Military have threatened to appoint its own civil administration shortly – with or without an agreement with George Speight – following the breakdown in negotiations.

FIJI COUP: Families of the remaining 27 hostages now fear greatly for their loved ones following the release of the four women hostages.

NZ BACKPACKERS: Fire Chief Ken Harper has warned that some NZ backpackers hostels do not have evacuation certificates and could prove dangerous. Meanwhile the hostel association say they do not know what Mr Harper is talking about.

QANTAS NZ: Qantas NZ will provide strong competition for Air New Zealand says the Consumers Institute. Travel agents meanwhile say they do not expect a price war.

GENETIC CODE: Scientists now have a draft of the full Human Genetic Code. Scientists describe the discovery as a gift to humanity.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: The Ministry of Education say they are worried that parents will lose confidence in new qualifications – the National Certificate which will replace School Certificate next year - before they are even introduced. The principal of Auckland Grammar school has said he may bring in British A Levels exams in order to challenge his pupils.

OCEAN EXPERIMENT: Scientists will start dropping thousands of sophisticated floats in the Pacific Ocean shortly to measure temperatures and salinity.
