FIJI COUP: Deposed Fijian PM Mahendra Chaudhry – in Australia - says that the new government in Fiji is not democratic.

FIJI COUP: The Fijian Army is negotiating with hostage holding rebels in Labasa in Northern Fiji and expects a resolution of the crisis in the area today – a deadline given to rebels to give up by midnight last night has been extended for 24 hours to midnight tonight.

INJURED CHILD: A baby girl airlifted from Whangarei to Auckland’s Starship hospital is expected to survive but may suffer from brain damage. The child has a head injury and cigarette burns around her neck according to police. She was found in a coma.

CONCORDE: Accident investigators say that the pilot of the Concorde which crashed last week had no choice but to take off as the debris from the tyre bursting was found beyond the “V1” point beyond which the pilot had signaled he had to take off.

ARTS FESTIVAL: A study of the Wellington Festival of the Arts has concluded that the Arts Festival brought in $40 million to the Wellington economy.

EARTHQUAKES: Three relatively large earthquakes have rocked islands South of Tokyo causing landslides and some damage.

ROBO HEART: Israeli surgeons have transplanted a robotic heart device into a patient.
