NIGHTMARE LIFE AND DEATH OF 6.5-YEAR-OLD: Two women sentenced to jail for killing a girl. A mother and her lover accused of beating and abusing their 6 and a half-year-old to death. The girl had bruising all over her body. The girl has been buried in the Hawke’s Bay. She went back to live with her mother when she was six years old. She was beaten regularly for the next six months. She also spent several nights in a shed. The girl had also been beaten. The prosecutor read from the diary of one of the women where she says she was in the power of her lover. One woman was sentenced to 18 months jail – for not preventing the death. The other raised her drug addiction in her defence. She was sentenced to 5 years jail. The week before the girl died the mother decided she wasn’t coping and tried to send her away – travel plans fell through.

ICY BLAST: Surface flooding on the Canterbury Plains. Some passes closed with snow. On the Port Hills it is not snowing, but is horrible. Snow closed roads to Queenstown during the day and two buses went off the road – no one was injured. At Fairlie motorists were turned back. In mid-Canterbury there are concerns about flooding – and cold sheep. Farmers say they are looking forward to rain though. Tourists in Tekapo had a snowfight. Tekapo has had 30cm of snow. On the coast there is lots of flooding on SH1. Met warnings mean people have expected this storm.
