STRETCH’S KILLER’S LONG STRETCH: The killer of a Mangakino policeman has been jailed for 18 years minimum by the Court of Appeal. The sentencing decision has been welcomed by campaigners for longer sentences. Constable Stretch died in May last year when investigating a break-in in a shop – he was battered to death by the accused who was caught with chocolate bars. 18 years is the longest sentence yet in NZ. Norm Withers is pleased. Peter Williams says that while he detests violence there must be fairness with sentencing decisions.
AUS PLANE CRASH: A NZ miner is among those who died when a plane continued on auto-pilot with its pilots and passengers to crash in Western Australia. The crash is similar to that that killed golfer Payne Stewart. A sudden depressurization of the cabin could be the cause.
TONGAN PLANE SCARE: There was an emergency problem with a 737 arriving from Tonga today with a burst tyre. The plane was able to land on its remaining 3 tyres. The pilot says the tyres were new. The pilot called for a full emergency response in Auckland. The plane continued on to Auckland because Auckland was considered as safer place to land. The tyre was replaced quickly.
CONCORDE: Investigators in Paris say a piece of metal thought responsible for the explosion of the Concorde definitely came from a DC 10 from across the Atlantic that took off shortly before Concorde. The 33cm piece of metal is thought responsible for bursting a tyre leading to the explosion of concorde.
GYNAECOLOGIST COMPLAINTS: Another 20 women have come forward to complain about a Northland gynaecologist Graham Parry profiled in a 20/20 Documentary on TV3 on Sunday night. Mother Michelle returned to Parry four times after a ceasearian scar failed to heel to be sent home to get better. Later after her husband insisted she be treated Parry ound a nylon stitch was left inside her. At least 20 women have told stories similar to Michelles since seeing her story on telly. ACC has confirmed that 6 women have had claims accepted against Parry for medical misadventure, TV3 thinks there are more. Parry is going before the Medical Tribunal shortly on charges of disgraceful conduct. Parry says he isn’t commenting through his lawyer.
CANCER INQUIRY HOLDUP: The Gisborne Cancer Inquiry has been refused information that identifies women by the Ministry of Health. The inquiry may be delayed as the legal issue is sorted out as it is thought that the report cannot be completed without this information.
TARIANA TURIA: As promised Tariana Turia has apologised for her Holocaust remarks. Turia apologised saying she would not belittle the experiences suffered by others. Turia’s apology came only after a meeting with the PM. Jenny Shipley says that Turia has defied her PM. Turia has the qualified backing of her colleagues. Turia says she has had several letters of support from, “thinking NZers”.
DOVER SAMUELS: Dover Samuels is hinting he may quit the Labour Party now he has been fully cleared of any sexual misconduct. Samuels says it is weight off his shoulders to know he has been cleared. “It has gone through the mind of many of my supporters…. I will certainly be discussing that at various huis with my people.” Samuels lawyer says that it is unfair that he hasn’t been given his job back. Labour has been wounded by the saga. Labour caucus members were closed lips on the subject.
