OLYMPICS: The first two days of the Olympics have been marked by the expulsion of a weightlifting team and a rash of world records in the pool. The Roumanian team has been suspended following the third positive drug test. Eight world records have been set in the pool so far.
NZERS AT OLYMPICS: Cyclist Sarah Ullmer will ride for bronze today after being beaten in her semi-final last night. Barbara Kendall is 3rd overall in board sailing. Fellow board sailer Aaron McIntosh is in 25th place after over-stepping the start ,mark. Triathlon Hamish Carter finished 26th . All rowers have gone through to semi-finals.
TRUCK SAFETY: The Road Transport Forum has recommended new rules for truckies to make NZ’s roads safer. The forum wants one speed limit of 90kmh for all trucks.
PERU: There have been celebrations on the streets of Peru after President Fujimori announced that he will be stepping down after just a few months in office following May election. The decision follows bribery allegations involving the head of the secret service.
MANAKAU: The Ministry of Health wants to prevent Manakau City Council increasing its controls over community housing.
QUEENSTOWN SLIP: Work crews will begin work this morning on a massive slip on the Kawerau Highway at Nevis Bluff which has closed the main road to Queenstown. The slip is 50m long and 30m wide and is expected to take several days to shift.
PAULA YATES: British Police are treating the death of Paula Yates as suspicious. The former wife of Bob Geldof and partner of Michael Hutchence was found dead in her bed aged 40.
TOXIC BLOOM: Mussel farmers in Marlborough continue to wait for the toxic algal bloom to move into marine farming areas.
MURDERS: Police have increased the numbers working on a homicide of a pensioner in Hamilton. The pensioner was found in a central city park. In west-Auckland police are still trying to identify a body found in the Waitakere ranges.
