OVERSTAYERS: The Samoan Community in Auckland is expecting thousands of families to apply for normalisation of their immigration status following a decision to offer work permits to one third of overstayers. The harshest critic of the new policy is New Zealand First.
RECORD BREAKING: There was more record breaking drama in the Olympic Pool last night. Aussie teenager Thorpedo does it again, this time in a relay. His Dutch rival also broke another world record.
NZ MEDALS: Another day of disappointment. Andrew Nicholson has withdrawn from. The NZ women soft-ballers have also lost.
HOSTAGES: Meanwhile two escaped prisoners took an Olympic van, a Korean official and two volunteers hostage yesterday before releasing them.
CUBAN PLANE CRASH: A cargo vessel has found the wreck of a Cuban plane off the coast of Florida. The accident followed a hijacking.
OIL PROTESTS: Protests about the price of fuel are spreading across Europe. The British Government is again under fire. Spain’s capital is the victim of a massive tractor protest. Swedish and Noway are also having problems and Irish fishermen are on strike.
DOLLAR: The Kiwi Dollar is now buying 41.36 US cents.
HURUNUI COUNCIL’S DAM: Hurunui District Council is accused of misleading the public over plans to dam two rivers. Hurunui’s mayor says a critical report is not ready for public consumption.
TVNZ CHARTER: The government has released for comment a draft charter for TVNZ. Marian Hobbs says the greater emphasis on public service makes it hard for TVNZ to be an SOE.
NURSES: Nurses Organisation annual conference begins today amid threats of strikes at Capital Coast Health. Nurses say that while there is money for doctors, what about them.
